Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills Training for Eating Disorders

ONGOING WEEKLY HYBRID (In-person and Virtual): Current Group is closed, but a new group will start Summer 2023

This HYBRID group is available to individuals in the following states:

OH only

Wednesdays 5:15-6:45pm

Build a Life Worth Living by learning skills to improve mindfulness, tolerate distressing emotions and situations, be more effective in relationships and learn how to manage your own emotions. DBT skills can benefit anyone who finds that their eating patterns are impacted by emotions, relationships, and stress.

The skills group will be offered as a hybrid group, therefore individuals can choose to attend in-person or virtually.

DBT Skills Training consists of 24 weekly group sessions focused on four modules- Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. In this group, you will learn how to apply these DBT skills responding to and coping with eating disorder symptoms and behaviors. We also discuss their application to general emotion dysregulation.

This group is targeted to help individuals 18 yrs+ struggling with restriction, binge eating, purging, overexercising, and other impulsive or problematic behaviors learn skills to help reduce these behaviors. We also discuss application of the skills to mood, anxiety and other problematic behaviors and concerns.

There are 4 areas of skills training that will be covered:

Mindfulness: These skills focus on increasing awareness of the present moment. You will learn how to focus your attention, decrease judgments, and participate in life fully.

Distress Tolerance: These skills are effective when patients are in crisis or have strong, intense emotions or urges that they need to tolerate.

Emotion Regulation: These skills help patients learn how to identify emotions, how to regulate emotions, reduce vulnerabilities of emotion dysregulation, and learn the function of emotions.

Interpersonal Effectiveness: These skills help patients learn how to ask for what they need or want, or how to say no to requests.

This group is led by Dr. Sarah Altman who has been trained extensively in DBT and providing DBT for the past 15 years.
